Pressure Switches

Pressure switches are available in mechanical or electrical form acting as an open or closed controller for pressure-sensitive applications. They can be used in a diverse range of industries such as activating a water pump when the water pressure changes in reservoirs or in air filters in the automotive industry.

What are pressure switches?

Pressure switches are control devices that open or close an electrical circuit when a set pressure point is reached. In other words, instead of giving you a continuous pressure reading (as a sensor or gauge would), a pressure switch provides a clear on or off signal that can be used to protect equipment, trigger alarms, or automate actions such as starting a pump or shutting down a system when pressure moves outside a safe range.

In many systems, pressure switches work alongside instrumentation such as pressure sensors or digital pressure gauges, giving you both continuous monitoring and dependable switching for control.

How pressure switches work

A pressure switch monitors system pressure and activates at a defined set point. Once that set point is reached, the switch changes state (normally open to closed, or normally closed to open), which can be used to control relays, PLC inputs, alarms, pumps, compressors, and other equipment.

Depending on the model and application, switching behaviour can include:

  • Set point: the pressure at which the switch changes state
  • Reset point: the pressure at which it returns to its normal state
  • Hysteresis or window mode: useful for avoiding unwanted rapid switching in fluctuating conditions

Where you need straightforward, volts free switching, a mechanical design is often the simplest solution. Where you need more configuration options, digital display, or advanced modes, an electronic pressure switch is usually the better fit.

Mechanical vs electronic pressure switches

Mechanical pressure switches are activated by the pressure of the process fluid acting on an internal mechanism. They are commonly chosen when you want a simple, robust switching function without the complexity of electronics, particularly in lower pressure applications involving air, gases, and liquids. Our mechanical pressure switch range includes options such as factory set and adjustable models, including versions suitable for hazardous areas.

Electronic pressure switches combine pressure measurement with configurable switching, typically offering features such as programmable set points, hysteresis and window modes, and easy set up via an integrated display. If you need adaptable control and clearer on device configuration, the electronic pressure switches range is designed for intelligent switching across a wide variety of applications, with options including ATEX and IECEx approvals for hazardous environments.

Choosing the right pressure switch

The best pressure switch depends on how your system behaves and what you need the switch to do. It helps to define:

  • The pressure range, including overpressure and vacuum conditions
  • Media and material compatibility with your process fluid
  • Required switching function (high or low pressure, alarm, pump control, safety shutoff)
  • Output and integration needs (simple contact switching versus programmable switching)
  • Environmental requirements such as vibration, washdown, or hazardous area approvals

If your application needs a continuous pressure signal as well as switching, you may also want to compare solutions across our broader pressure measurement range, particularly where pressure data is being used for control, monitoring, and maintenance planning.

Typical applications for pressure switches

Pressure switches are widely used in industrial and mobile equipment where reliable threshold control is essential. Common examples include pump and compressor control, hydraulic system protection, pneumatic circuits, filter monitoring, and safety interlocks.

Where your control logic depends on pressure difference between two points, for example across a filter or flow element, a differential solution can be more appropriate, and our differential pressure transmitters range is a useful reference point when comparing options.
