Signal Converters

Signal converters are used to adapt, isolate, scale, or retransmit signals so different instruments and control systems can work together reliably. They help bridge the gap between field devices and control equipment, especially where signal compatibility, electrical isolation, or safe transmission is important. We offer a wide range of signal converters for process measurement and industrial automation applications.

Signal converters for measurement and process integration

Signal converters sit between field instruments and the receiving system. They take an input from a sensor, transmitter, or control device and convert it into a form that can be safely and accurately used elsewhere in the loop. Within a wider instrumentation setup, signal converters are commonly used to standardise outputs, isolate circuits, improve signal integrity, and ensure compatibility between devices from different manufacturers.

Why signal converters are used

In many applications, the original signal from a field device is not suitable for direct connection to a PLC, controller, display, or SCADA system. A signal converter can be used to change one signal type into another, such as converting temperature, current, voltage, frequency, or resistance inputs into a standard process output.

This is especially useful where systems need galvanic isolation, long cable runs introduce noise risk, or multiple devices need access to a stable retransmitted signal. In process environments, signal converters are often used to support temperature measurement, pressure measurement, level measurement, and flow measurement installations by ensuring the measurement signal is reliable and usable across the full control chain.

Signal converters in the Stork range

Stork’s signal converter range includes models designed to support common industrial measurement and control requirements:

  • For applications where electrical separation is important, signal isolators help protect control systems and improve signal stability by isolating the input, output, and power supply.
  • Universal signal converters are suited to installations where flexibility is needed, allowing a range of input and output types to be configured for different instruments and systems.
  • Temperature signal converters are commonly used to convert RTD or thermocouple signals into standard analogue outputs for connection to controllers, indicators, or PLCs.
  • Current and voltage converters support the integration of sensors and transmitters that use standard industrial signals such as 4 to 20 mA or 0 to 10 V.
  • Frequency and pulse converters are useful where rotating equipment, flow sensors, or counters produce signals that need scaling or retransmission.
  • Signal splitters allow one input signal to be duplicated across multiple outputs where monitoring and control equipment both require the same measurement data.

Isolation, scaling, and signal conditioning

Not every application is simply about changing one signal format into another. In many systems, the converter also plays a role in conditioning the signal so it can be transmitted more reliably and interpreted more clearly by downstream equipment. This may include scaling the signal range, linearising the input, filtering electrical noise, or providing isolation to protect sensitive electronics.

If you are building a complete instrumentation solution, signal converters are often specified alongside transmitters, indicators, controllers, and alarm units to create a dependable measurement and control chain from field sensor to panel or automation system.

Choosing the right signal converter

Selection typically comes down to:

  • The type of input signal coming from the sensor, transmitter, or control device
  • The output signal required by the receiving equipment
  • Whether galvanic isolation is needed between input, output, and power
  • Whether signal scaling, splitting, or retransmission is required
  • Mounting format and panel or DIN rail installation requirements
  • The environmental and electrical conditions of the application
