The Purpose of Self-Flushing Nose Cones on Submersible-Level Transmitters

What is a nose cone? #

Nose cones are engineered to address common challenges associated with hydrostatic level transmitters that are intended for full submersion in liquids, particularly in environments where debris, turbulence, or pressure fluctuations are present. They screw of clip onto the front of the level sensor before deployment and can be removed to exposed a thread or connection to enable future calibration and testing requirements.

Importance of self flushing #

The primary function of a self-flushing nose cone is to facilitate the unobstructed flow of media through the pressure port. By allowing the liquid to drain naturally, it prevents media from being retained in the port due to the meniscus effect. This design reduces the risk of measurement errors caused by trapped liquid and ensures consistent pressure readings.

Protection from Debris #

In addition to preventing liquid retention, self-flushing nose cones serve as a protective barrier against debris. By shielding the pressure port from direct exposure, they minimize the risk of clogging or damage caused by solid particles. This protection is especially valuable in applications involving sediment-laden or contaminated fluids, where blockages could compromise the transmitter’s performance.

Protection from direct impact #

Furthermore, the nose cone design mitigates the impact of overpressures or pressure spikes. By preventing the direct entry of media into the pressure port, the nose cone reduces the likelihood of sudden pressure surges damaging sensitive internal components, thereby prolonging the transmitter’s lifespan.

Benefits of a counterweight #

For applications involving turbulent conditions, extended versions of nose cones are available. These extended cones act as counterweights, adding stability to theĀ submersible transmitter. The added weight helps maintain the transmitter’s position, ensuring accurate measurements even in dynamic or fast-moving liquids.

Conclusion #

Self-flushing nose cones are vital for enhancing the performance, protection, and longevity of submersible-level transmitters, making them indispensable in demanding oil & gas, industrial and environmental monitoring applications.
