Hydrogen & Renewable Energy

The hydrogen economy and the broader renewable energy sector are creating entirely new demands on pressure instrumentation. Electrolysers, fuel cell stacks, hydrogen storage vessels, biogas digesters, and high-pressure refuelling infrastructure all require transmitters that can handle hydrogen’s unique properties without compromising safety or measurement integrity. Stork Solutions supplies a dedicated range of hydrogen pressure transmitters engineered from the ground up for H2 service, alongside proven instruments for biogas, technical gas, and renewable energy applications. Every hydrogen-rated product in our range addresses the critical challenges of hydrogen embrittlement, molecular permeation, and leak-tight construction that standard industrial transmitters simply cannot meet.

Key Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Applications:

Hydrogen-Specific Pressure Transmitters for Production, Storage, and Distribution

Hydrogen’s small molecular size and tendency to diffuse through conventional materials make it one of the most demanding gases to measure safely. Standard pressure transmitters risk embrittlement, permeation, and seal degradation over time. Stork Solutions eliminates these risks with purpose-built hydrogen instruments. The DMP 333P features a flush stainless steel diaphragm with an optional gold-plated process connection and diaphragm, specifically designed to prevent hydrogen permeation and embrittlement in pressure ranges from 60 to 600 bar. For broader hydrogen and technical gas applications up to 1,000 bar, the DMP 336 uses a revolutionary alloy based on 316L that prevents embrittlement of all media-wetted components, with oil and grease-free construction to ISO 15001 for oxygen compatibility. Both transmitters are available with optional intrinsically safe versions for hazardous area installations in hydrogen production facilities, storage depots, and distribution networks.

Fuel Cell and Electrolyser Pressure Monitoring

Fuel cell performance depends directly on precise control of hydrogen supply pressure, and electrolysers require accurate pressure measurement across both the hydrogen and oxygen sides of the stack. In these applications, even minor measurement drift or a slow seal leak can affect efficiency, shorten system lifespan, or create a safety hazard. The DCT 541 brings Modbus RTU digital communication to hydrogen pressure measurement, supporting integration into modern fuel cell control systems and electrolyser management platforms where up to 247 devices can be addressed on a single bus. Its wetted parts are manufactured from special stainless steel with dedicated cleaning and manufacturing procedures that minimise hydrocarbon and particle contamination. For higher pressure hydrogen systems such as compression stages and tube trailer storage, the DMP 334 handles pressures up to 2,200 bar with ATEX certification and SIL 2 compliance, while the DMP 334 i adds digital signal processing for precision measurement with a 1:10 turn-down ratio.

Biogas and Anaerobic Digestion Pressure Measurement

Biogas production sits at the intersection of renewable energy and waste management, and the instrumentation challenges are more complex than they first appear. Raw biogas contains methane, CO2, and variable levels of hydrogen sulphide (H2S), often in a moisture-laden environment where corrosive condensate can collect at the sensing point. The DMK 331 is a proven choice for biogas digester pressure measurement, available with 316L wetted parts, FKM sealing, and a PVDF pressure port option for installations where wet sour condensate cannot be ruled out. Its ceramic sensor provides excellent chemical resistance, while intrinsically safe (Ex ia) and SIL 2 certified versions address the hazardous area requirements that methane-containing environments demand. For applications requiring a flush-mounted diaphragm to handle viscous or contaminated media, the DMK 331 P variant extends the same platform with dead-space-free construction.

High Pressure and Ultra-High Pressure Measurement for Hydrogen Refuelling and Testing

Hydrogen refuelling stations and high-pressure test rigs operate at pressures that exceed the capability of most standard industrial transmitters. Dispensing pressures for fuel cell vehicles typically reach 350 or 700 bar, while compression and cascade storage systems can push well beyond that. The DMP 333 covers pressures up to 600 bar with excellent insensitivity to pressure spikes, making it suitable for dynamic loading conditions found in compressor discharge lines and fast-fill dispensers. For the most extreme hydrogen pressure applications, the DMP 304 measures up to 6,000 bar with ATEX certification, while the SHP 1000 extends the range to 5,000 bar with titanium wetted parts for outstanding corrosion resistance and accuracy as tight as 0.10% FSO. These instruments support the critical safety and performance requirements of hydrogen infrastructure as the sector scales.
